I noticed that the orange elastomer ring on my harmonic balancer has some broken off areas. It is still working ok for the moment but it is the original one. My car is a 1976 L-48, original engine, automatic w/air with around 118,000 miles. It's probably time to replace it before it goes and causes other (more expensive) problems. The car is only driven about 5,000 miles a year at most so I don't need any real exotic replacement, but I really don't want to put some poor quality Chinese piece of crap part on it either. Can anyone give me the GM replacement part number and /or suggestions on a good quality damper to replace it with?
Seems it's not your primary transport ... suggest you pull it off ... take it to a good GM parts dept ... have them match it with a GM part ... even if they have to order. If that fails, come back here with all damper dimensions.
In addition to several diameters ... there are subtle differences in thickness that might foul correct belt alignment.
GM or good equivalent brand is likely to outlast us.
Thanks for the replies. I don't think I would trust a used one, might not get anything better than what is on there now. I want to make sure I don't get an import, so I was hoping if I couldn't get the information on what brand to get, if not GM, at least I could get some feedback on what brand not to get . It's no fun doing the same repair twice (unless there are ten years or so in between).
