It was an old trick. A chain or cable was bolted to the block then to the frame. It worked but just put in solid motor mounts and don't worry about it.

Stock mounts can fail on less than high-perf applications. If you're making any kind of power at all (say from around 300hp up) I'd at least go with interlocking mounts (poly or otherwise). Better yet are solid mounts (), which also serve to stiffen the front of the chassis to some degree. Same part number fits SB or BB in C3's.
IMHO, a strap is a crutch out of Bubba's shop manual (yeah, I've done it too), even tho they have been accepted by many sanctioning bodies thru the years. If you're making enough power that solid mounts won't do, you really need motor plates. Just my $.02...

I disagree, solid mounts transmit engine vibration much more, a concern on a street car (for me anyway). I'd go with interlocking mounts like mentioned, but a strap isn't bubba if done right, GM used them.
I remember a recall back when 69 Nova SS big block. The dealer installed a cable around the exhaust manifold to the frame. At the time I thought that was kinda BuBa fix. But thats what they did.
What gives? I thought you'd have the bullet installed and running by now. Thanks again.
My helper for today got called out to work so it looks like next weekend is the day to install it. Unless you want to make a trip up and help me. I got free beer for AFTER

This recall was a result of motor mount failures. In their infinite wisdom GM decided that wrapping a cable around the exhaust manifold and bolting it to the chassis was cheaper than installing new motor mounts, ...even when the motor mount was clearly broken.
The first time I saw their recall solution, I was sure I had found the origin of "Bubba"...
The good news was that GM shortly after this (70-71 timeframe) came out with the interlocking motor mounts shown here for little more than the old ones. shmoky... the drivers side motor mount sees the majority of torque as the engine tries to separate the motor mount so this should work, but I must tell you, I would replace both of them.
Back in the day, a lot of folks would simply drill a hole through the center of the motor mount and install a bolt with a nylock nut. (Don't torque it, just snug it up.) This would relieve most of the torque stress on the mount that would eventually separate it, but didn't interfere with the vibration dampening qualities of having the rubber mount.

I'd be there if it wasn't for that pesky commute, 4 hrs on our nice icy roads about right? Hope you haven't polished the chrome off your covers yet. Have fun and if you happen to video tape a clip of it running shoot it to me, I can't wait to hear that monster rumble.
