About three years ago I replaced the spring bolts with a stock length polyurethane kit. I can't remember where I got it from but I think it was Ecklers. I looked under the car this afternoon and the lower cushion on the drivers side had completely disintegrated. Both the upper and lower washer were still there. There was no sign of any other damage of any kind. The spring still looked OK. The upper cushion still looks ok, and so do the upper and lower cushions on the passenger side. I am beginning to not be a fan of polyurethane anything. I think I will replace all four with rubber. Is this what happens when polyurethane goes bad, it just disintegrates in pieces? Or could something else chemical have caused it like overspray from brake cleaner or something? Any ideas?
I've never seen or heard of a poly bushing completely crumbling away. It could have been a defective part or something could have caused it to be ruined. Every one I've ever used has looked new even after many miles of use.
I know, this was pretty strange to me too. I would think if they were defective all four of them would have Deteriorated the same way. the other three look fine. I got some OEM rubber cushions to replace them with so I will look a little closer tonight. There must have been some type of defect in the one cushion from the start. That's all I can think of.
Replaced them tonight. Other three polyurethane cushions were A-ok. Nothing wrong with the spring or anything else in the rear suspension. I guess it must have just been a defective cushion. Maybe the other three weren't from the same batch of urethane as the one that failed. Wierd. At least they are easy to replace.
