Default Cotter Pin Sizes

Another stupid question. Bolts are sold by thread pitch, length and the diameter of the bolt. What about cotter pins? Are they sold by length and wire thickness? What sizes does the chassis use?

Diameter and length.

Sorry, I don't know what all sizes are used in the chassis.

Not sure what sizes are correct for restoration or if there in any concern.

With most application you should use the largest size that will fit the head properly into the castelation and not flop around loosely. The length doeas not matter aslong as you trim them correctly.

A properly installed cotter pin should have the lower half of the pin foled down the side of the nut and trimed so not tuching the washer or material below the nut. The upper half of the pin should be folded up and over the bolt end covering half to full diamitor of the bolt end when trimed.

Do not follow bubba with a "butterfly" around the sides of the nut or bend both halfs up and over.

I hope that give you an idea as I do not have a drawing. This is the same standard that is used in aviation.

I know exactly what you are referring too. I want to go and buy some cotter pins today, I just don't know what sizes I should buy. I need them for my chassis.

GOOD NEWS...Corvette Central sells a cotter pin set with instructions as to what size is used where. The research and sets were done by NCRS Judge Terry McManmon. $10.00.
Regards,
Alan
