I am replacing the dash harness on a 1971. It was originally a 4 speed and someone converted it to a TH400 auto. Should I purchase the dash harness for an auto or the original 4 speed. Thanks.
BENE,
I don't think there's a difference between an automatic harness and a 4-speed harness. I believe the only difference is with or without air conditioning. The transmission difference dash harness starts in 1975.
Regards,
Alan
You would think that the harnesses would have to be different due to the backup switch location from auto to manual. Im converting an auto to manual, and have wondered about that. Im going to just build an extension to the trans mounted muncie B/U switch.

The wire that attaches to the trans. plugs into a plug at or near the firewall.
For that reason , I am not sure the auto / manual wire would matter.
Couldn't either one attach to the wire from inside the car?
I put a new one in my car (4 speed harness) The only difference that I noted was the switch that goes on the clutch pedal linkage. On a four speed car you must push the clutch pedal in to start. On the automatic you have a nutral safety switch.
