I got it all back together with the 3.70 gears. It runs fine, no noise and I really do not notice a lot of difference from the 4.11. I probably will on the highway but around town it is a bout the same. Burned about 100 feet of rubber in 2nd gear just to make sure everything will hold up and no problems. If the weather holds out I might take it to the track this Saturday to see what the difference in times will be between the 3.70 and the 4.11 gears. :)
Joe, I was eying up a 427 sb the other day. Over thanksgiving I rode in my brother in laws 421 sb Camaro at about 600 hp. Almost to much power for the street. Did I say to much? Probably a roller cam will be next. The drag radials are a must now. I am hoping for mid to low 12s. Any faster and I will not be able to run at most tracks. I don't want to add any roll bars. If I get to the track I'll post my numbers
Sounds great! Glad to hear that they are quiet. I can hardly wait to get mine back on the road. I know that I will feel a BIG difference from this change vs. the original 3.07 ratio.
Without having any prior experience regarding rear ends I can’t help but to fail conservative. I have read a little bit of information about proper break in of the new gears and since I don’t know any better, I’m going to do my best to somewhat follow the recommended break in procedure.
If you have never had any problems with previous gear swaps, then you can disregard this information but I know that I DON’T want to go back in there any time soon. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=193247

I think A couple of us are going to try and do it... are you up for it????? I think I will be going to look a house Saturday am... then to Atco... should be there by 10 or so.
Gordon, I have been watching you for a while since we have similar cars. I have a 72 LT1 with its original 4.11 gears. Great for throwing rubber on the road, but a PITA for highway driving. I know you had to replace the whole differential and all. I am considering this for my winter project. I took out my 66 diff. a while back to have it rebuilt so I am familiar with the project. Do you mind if I ask where you got your Diff., what came with it, and what you paid? I want to buy a whole new one with side yokes and all. Then I will just pull my original one and put it in the corner.
Mike a house this sounds serious. You need a garage anyway to get the frame off.I'll be there around 10 to 10.30 if all works out. I am definitly going. I have to get a run or two with the different gears
Gary, I got the rear from a fellow forum member this spring for I think 325. It was a complete 3.70 rear less stubs. The numbers said it was from a 79 and he said it was a good rear and no problems with it. I put a bearing kit in it and seals for about 110. I was able to use my stub shafts from the other rear They were replacement hardened tips so I just reused them. I used the gears and the case and the spider gears and used the clutch pack from the exploded rear. Just cleaned the clutch pack up as they only had about 4k miles on it. Reassembled everything adn so far the gears are quiet and it runs good. I'll see if it holds up to the strip this weekend. :smash:
