Man this is getting expensive, I should have done the 5speed kit!! Im converting from auto to a muncie. A while back I posted on which hurst shift kit to buy, the one for the tranny (66-67) or the one for the car (74). The responce I got was to get the one for the year of the tranny. After mocking up the tranny under the car I noticed the shifter looked like it was about "2 too far forward. Looking at the shifter mounts on the tranny, there is another hole to the rear. I am assuming thats the one I need to be in. Do I need the rods and mounting plate for the 69-72? Looking in yearone they dont have one for 74 just 69-72. Any advice before I shell out another $100!!
The install kit for the 66-67 Vette tranny will be wrong and the one for the '74 Vette will be wrong too. The older kit has the right levers but the mounting bracket and rods will be for a C2 console location and you know that's a bad idea.
You can't use the '74 install kit either because the levers are bolt-on style that won't work with the early nut-on style tranny plus the '74 tailshaft casting is the 3 hole style and those holes are in the wrong places for your early tailshaft bolt pattern. This tailshaft is too far different from the 69 and earlier.
You should be able use the mounting bracket/kit for a 68 Vette. Look at it this way - The shifter needs to be located to fit a C3 (not a C2). The '68 Vette is the ONLY kit that uses the early nut-style shifter shafts AND proper C3 shifter bracket location and rods.
The C3 Hurst shifter itself is purchased separately. Just be sure it is a C3 shifter.
The Hurst web site has PDF install manuals with all the individual part numbers listed. It takes time but you can save yourself a few headaches there.

On my 68, I inadvertently bent the longest shift rod on my Muncie. I unknowingly replaced it with a 69 shifter rod. I couldn't adjust the shifter. Turns out this rod is slightly longer for one year as compared to the other year. Volunteer Vet helped out with this and sent me the correct 68 shifter rod.
Jegs has a rod and plate kit listed for 67-79. I guess that should cover it???
Nope - you need the install kit for a 68 Corvette that works with a Competition Plus shifter. It is a "fits only one year and only one application" box of parts. The Hust part number is 373-4648. The Jegs part number is 530-373-4648 and they sell it for about $122.
MadMickey! I just purchased two Hurst Comp kits from Summit Racing - one for my 69 & one for a friends 78. The installation kit was the same for both cars - Muncie or Borg Warner. I don't know if Summit had Hurst creat a "one size fits all" kit because it got too complicated.
MM - I have a box or extra Hurst stuff. If you can give me an idea of what length arm you need - its yours. Is the arm al you need?

John,
That is very nice of you to offer BUT he's gonna need EVERYTHING in the '68 only kit. Some parts might work on both but there are enough pieces that definately won't work that he might as well buy the '68 only kit and be done with it. The tranny levers will not work for sure.

Bummer! Just trying to help a Corvette Brother out.
Thanks for the offer vetteman, and thanks for all the info stingr. I already ordered the 67-79 kit. I will open it carefully and look things over. If I cant do some modification, or combine the two kits to work I'll send it back and get the right one coming. I guess thats what I get for being in a hurry!!
One of the "ultimate truths" you will discover on your C3 'trek' is:
When you find/buy/steal/borrow any replacement parts, your first assumption should be that there is something wrong with them...instead of assuming that they are correct [just because they came from a reputable company and have the "right" info on the box they came in]. If you follow that rule and check out everything, compare it to what you are replacing, etc., it will save a lot of grief.
Anyone ever got a "bumb" or wrong part that they installed behind the dash and buttoned it up before doing a double-check? DOOOHHH!
