Default engine oil cooler install

Installed an engine oil cooler to help with the cooling of the engine. I got this one from a seller on eBay that sells MASCAR stuff. Most say that their oil cooler is not needed until they drive hard; I can tell you that mine is working just driving around town normally. It looks like I have total control of my temps now. I did add two more fans to the radiator, two pushers in front of the radiator. I drove the car a few times with the cooler and added fans and the temp stays at 180* as it should. It is still cool (70*) here so the real test will be when it gets to 95*. I can see when I turn the fans on; the temp will drop and than it will come back up when the T-stat starts closing. I have a T-stat controller on the oil cooler so oil bypasses it when the engine is below 160*, at 160* the oil starts flowing through the cooler and all the oil is flowing through the cooler at 180*. It’s easy to feel that the cooler is doing its job just by grabbing the inlet and outlet of the cooler. It is working great.

Some pics of the install:

Is your hood going to even open with that big cooler on the outside of the pushers?

Does that adapter route 100% of oil through cooler or just a portion of it? The lines look a little small to handle 100% of the oil flow for that long of a run. What size are they?

Looks good Neal

Are those AN fittings on the stainless hose? If so, what size and where did you get the adapter fitting? Also, is the pusher fan and cooler supported on top or just at the bottom? It isn't clear from the pic.

I have not installed the hood since the cooler install, I had already decided to shorten the support if the hood hits the cooler. It should not be a big job to cut the support and make it shorter.

The adapter has a valve in it that is open and starts closeing as the oil temp climbs, it starts diverting oil at around 160* and at 180* the valve is closed and all the oil is going to the cooler. The lines are AN-12 (3/4") along with the fittings. The smallest section is the ports at the filter adapter they are 1/2" NPT.

They are AN fittings and are AN-12 (3/4") I got them from DiscountHydraulicHose.com, they are the best place I have found for SS hose, they will assemble them for around $8 a hose and ship them to you, they are the cheapest place I have found for TFE/SS hose. They also have just about any fitting you could want.

The fans are strapped to the radiator and the cooler is strapped to the vacuum resivior and to the fans. I plan on making some brackets for the cooler and mounting it solid. This was a test run to see if the oil cooler would help with engine cooling. In the pic the cooler install is not complete, it is just sitting there.

Would you mind posting the list of part numbers for the fittings you used to have the lines made? Thanks.

Hi

That's a hell of a oil cooler.

I installed one to my L71 engine , it's much smaller and still keeps the oil temp below dangerous temps. On top of that, it is only mounted in the air stream, not assisted by any fan.
I am reading the oil temp in the adadptor before it enters the oil cooler, so basically oil pan temp.

Günther; what do your temps run?

redvetracr; whats wrong with TFE hose for oil lines? its good for just about anythig. the reason I am using it is most of the hose I looked at is rated at 212*max temp. from most posts on the forum that I read this is not high enough, few are rated at 250*, the TFE is rated at 450* and was as cheape or close to the cost of the others that have the higher temp rating. I also looked at hydraulic hoses but they are very heavy and marginal on the temp rating also (220*).

DB; soon as I get some time I will post the part numbers

Yea when I started looking for a cooler I was looking at the small ones, but with the temp controled bypass I figured I would install a large one and if I need the extra capacity it will be there and if I don't need it than it will just bypass the cooler.

I changed the links to part #'s, not sure if it is ok to post links to non vendor.

I am going to email them about the fittings needed for the HB install. They carry the O-ring fittings in standard sizes but I don't see them in 16 and 18mm. They have some in the right size but they are not O-ring they are reverse flare.

Most companies make their non-O-ring fittings so that an O-ring could still be slipped on the end. I found that even though Russel doesn't make a lot of O-ring fittings, all of them will accept an O-ring.

Where did you get the cooler, the oil lines, and the thremostatically controlled adapter plate? Was it all one kit?
