Default 1970 Hood Release

If you have the cable break on the drivers side. The best way to get to it, Is to take off the rocker moulding, then take off the filler panel under the fender. Then take out the egg crate vent. You can see the lock and you can release it by hand. I did it today.

I had this happen on my 71 and I only removed the egg crate grill

I do not understand why the rocker panel and splash guard needs to come off.

Can you help me understand?

Thanks
David

I can tell you why one might have to remove not the "rocker panel", but a splash panel underneath the front fender to get to it on a 1970 from my own experience. Some genious in my cars past decided to cut out the section that houses the "egg crate" grill, and then re- section in a 1973 and up section in its place. Leaving me no other way to get to the release than to remove this panel to get to the release latch. The paint on my car is far from new, so I know this was done some time ago. That said, they did a VERY good job with it (even though I hate the Idea of doing it at all), You still to this day can't tell it was done except when you look at the BACK side under the engine compartment to see the "sectioned" area.

Squirrelguy,
I can understand someone doing that change to your car especially if it was done long ago. I'm the original owner of my 71 and I remember many guys doing various changes to cars to make them look up to date.
I changed the parking light lenses on my 71 from clear (71) to amber (72) to make my car look like a new 72. Here's the crazy part... now I've done few things to it to make it look like a 70 since that's what I wish it were. I also wish it were a ZR-1, but that's just too much of a pipe dream.
Regards,
Alan

Alan 71,

So you're saying that it happened a lot? On my '71, the eggcrate is gone and it has a '73 trough or channel look. Done quite nicely and I don't mind it. Not sure how to change it back though. Would if I could.

Same here. I want to change mine back. I've already found and bought a set of egg crate grills for it. Had been trying to find a vendor that has just that section of lower fender that would house the grills, then find a shop to cut out the old and install the new ones. No luck so far. Short of this one would have to purchase a complete new set of fenders and replace the old ones which WILL be a very pricey way to go. Most would say the best way to go. My thought though is that you here so many horror stories of poor fitting after market body parts that the extra cost of MAKING them fit makes the job even more expensive. Thinking a GOOD fiberglass man could section in a set of "just the area that would house the grills", would be a better way to go. As I said in my previous post, it can be done well and hold up for a long time, since the sectioned in 73 and ups on mine are still holding VERY well. You cannot tell from the outside that it was ever done to this day. So if any one out there knows of a vendor that would deal in just these "patch sections" if you will, please let us know. Thanks.

Hi Alan, Hadn't thought of that as a reason that some folks made that change. I have to wonder though if they realized the value these cars would have held in the future to remain in thier original condition if they would have made these changes. Specificaly the ones that are not cheap to reverse. Oh well, hinde site is as they say 20/20 huh? By the way, love the car in your avitar, and I see your in Westminster Md. I know it well as I'm not so far from there in Shrewsbury Pa.

On my 70, I had to do it as described as the original poster did. The reason for removing the rocker molding and splash panel is to access the nuts that hold the bottom of the grill in place. I have had to do this twice on my car. The second time was when I got the car home from the roadside repair. Hopefully this will never happen again.

I hear ya but,........ you don"t NEED to remove the grill at all. Once you have the splash pan off, you can just reach up and trip the release from that point. As I said, I had no choice but to do it this way, as someone modified my fenders with the closed in style 73 and up sections. I had no grill area to go through.

I was on the side of the road working on mine and could not wiggle under the car far enough to get my arm all the way up from just the splash pan.
