Default Pilot Bushing Question

When my BB came back from the machine shop the pilot bushing was not pressed all the way into the crank. I'm installing a new bushing that came with my clutch set-up. How far in the crank should the bushing be installed? The GM overhaul manual shows an illustration that indicates that the bushing should be flush in the crank. Any advice on this?

It should be flush with the back edge of the crank.

Do you mean the surface on the crank that the flywheel bolts to or the recessed area that is deeper than that? It seems like it would need to be flush with the recessed area. That is also what the illustration shows in the GM overhaul manual.

There is a small taper on the end of the crankshaft to allow easy installation of the bushing. Install the bushing flush to where the taper ends.

Flush with the recessed area of the crank. Make sure your bearing is "non-magnetic" if you can pick it up with a magnet, it may squeel after installation. Pioneer makes a true Bronze bushing most of th eclutch kits have CHEAP Chinese junk packaged with them. Non-magnetic=GOOD! Magnetic=BAD!

Mine bushing cam from Ram. Not sure if it was magnetic or not. It broke while I was tapping it into the crank. Any idea where I can get the Pioneer bushing that you mentioned?

Also...anyone have installation tips? I don't want to have to do this a third time.

Lots of parts store carry them, but you can call them at 601-483-5211 for a local distributor. I always tap them into place using a similar sized deep well socket.

Thanks for the info. I'll give them a call. I used the socket method, I'm thinking that next time I'll put a bit of grease on the outside of the bushing.

It's a press fit so I'm not sure you want to use any grease. Not sure if it matters though.

I put mine in the freezer overnight before I install.

Most automotive machine shops carry the Poineer line. You may want to measure the outside if the bushing and the hle in the crank before driving the next bushing in. There should be no more than about 0.003-0.005" of interference fit between the 2 pieces.
