Having dinner tonite with my engineer buddy who wants to do the rebuild ourselves, should make a decission tonite as to wheather we are going to do it or let the motor shop have it. Have decided to go with more ponys, change the heads, pistons, cam and contact Lars to see what he can do with the carb.
All you guy's rock, great advise (based on experience).
Just got the engine into a stand last night. Hope to get too in the next week. needs cleaned up with degreaser and repainted. We'll determine wheather to fix ourselves or send out once we check the mains and wrist pins.

Unless you have the California LG4 305ci engine in your '80, you don't have an ECM. The L48 and L82 are all mechanical and vacuum, no electronics, but you do have several emissions systems.
I removed the engine from my 82 and took the crossfire off, removed all of the emissions stuff that was choking it and now have a very powerful carbeurated motor. I have a local shop that inspects the vehicle so I really dont care about any emission regulations.
