Out, into the truck and off to the engine shop, after the snow storm! Akron Ohio got about 10" of snow today with drifts as deep as 3' so why not pull the engine today!!
Couple of questions;
Does all the emission crap have to be re-installed?
Will the on-boaed ECM function correctly if I don't hook up all the emissions stuff?
The engine had a knock in it at high RPM's, some opinions, wrist pin, main bearing and a few others.
Rather than try to diagnose it myself I decided to let an engine shop in Massillon tear it down and fix it. It is a L48 190 HP, I'm considering having it increased to 230 HP, L82 which is the other engine option for this year. Not sure if just a simple cam change is the thing to do or go for more HP.
Any advise is greatly appreciated.

More than just a cam. It's piston style too, as it increases the compression, and I think valve sizes in the heads.
Simply trying to keep the numbers matching for re-sale value. But that doesn't mean I have ruled out a crate motor as I will simply moth ball the orignal. Have you done this yourself ?
I purchased a 350/330 several years ago for replacement in a Chevy 2 that I own. I have been very pleased with every aspect of that process. Very nice performer with excellent street manners. My vette was a gift from my father and the original motor is still in good shape
Good luck
If you're trying to keep it looking stock and keep the original numbers matching components in tact, I would at least consider a healthy cam and set of dome pistons to help w/ compression ratio. Other things to consider are:
Granger, Seville is very nice ,still looks like country and easilly accessable.
Don't overlook Granger and Sharon Center, both are boarder by I77 & I71 with Rt 18 cutting thruough the middle to Montrose or Medina.

That sounds like a great option. I v'e seen some kits in the Summit catalog which is a twenty minute drive from here.
What about the ECM, will it run without all the emissions crap, or will I have to put on a new ignition?
In spring and summer we have a Vette get together behind Burger King in Wadsworth. Not a club just a friendly get together around 6 til when ever, weather permiting.
I didn't think the '80 had the computer. I thought that was introduced in '81.
My opinion is to mothball and go with a crate. You might as well maximize your fun while you can.
And while you're deciding, you can take on that engine bay. Imagine how nice your new or rebuilt engine will look if you got it all cleaned up and painted.

Not sure but it may be. Spoke with Ollie Story of Story Motors of Massillon, He was very informative and did say that the ECM would not read the vacuum correctly on a new cam, but that maybe a chip could be changed to eliminate the problem. Also mentioned, as have many forum members that a new ignition system could run independent of the ECM.
I will sleep on all of the info from him and make a decision this week end as to what to do.
your right the computer age started in 81. you have a very easy year to hop up. i would put your money into building what you have. if its a tear down job i would go a 383 kit. put some alloy heads on it.a nice roller cam. decent carb. msd ignition . new balancer by the look of it and a few other bling bits and pieces. get a 2500 stall and change your diff gears to 3.55 and your flying . a new crate motor is going to cost more than that and you still have your matching numbers and more space in your garage cause a moth balled motor wont be sitting there.while your at it degrease that engine bay. rust prime your chassis and paint it all up. should look awesome.
