Default intake bolts

My intake requires 11 pounds of torque on the bolts. I don`t have a torque wrench. About how hard should I push or pull to get close to 11. I had a little oil coming up thru a couple of them and when i went to remove them so I could put sealant on. I could turn them out wiyh a socket and my fingers, I think thats a bit loose.

11 ftlbs is not that much. Tighten them up with a short wrench, maybe snug +1/2 turn. When you get a chance, buy a torque wrench and recheck them.

Here is a general rule of thumb. If you put a wrench on a bolt and put your right hand on the wrench, thumb pressing against the end of the wrench where the bolt is and fingers hooked on the handle, twist it tight using your wrist, average guy can make 25 or 30 lb ft torque. That may give you a reference.

go buy a pointer style torque wrench, cheap enough.
you can never be too safe and if you break a bolt and
cant get it out you will wish you had bout it.

You definitely want a torque wrench for the job. You're looking for trouble trying to guess the torque.

I got one. 11 pounds is not much. Does this seem right for an aluminum intake?

How did you come up with 11 ft lbs. The Gen 1 book I have shows
25 ft lbs for intake manifold bolts.

20 ft-lbs with the correct tightening pattern will work nicely for an aluminum manifold.

Its not going to matter if the intake is aluminum or iron the bolts are threading into the head. Its all about not over torquing the bolt and making it stretch to much for the quality of the bolt or torquing to much for the threads.

painterman52....

The answer to your initial question is pretty ease, really. The units of measurement for torque are in foot-pounds (or inch-pounds). Since torque is the product of force and distance, and you are wanting 11 foot-pounds [or whatever], you can accomplish that by applying 11 pounds of force on a torque-arm (wrench/ratchet/torque bar length) that is 1 foot in length...or you would put 22 pounds of force on a 6 inch (1/2 foot) long wrench. Torque (ft-lbs) = Force (lbs.) X Wrench length (ft.) This applies when the Force is applied at 90 degrees (right angle) to the torque-arm (which is always the case when using a wrench...unless you put some odd adapter between the wrench and the socket).
Likewise, if your units of measurement are inch-pounds, then you would measure the torque-arm length in inches, rather than feet. Torque (in-lbs) = Force (lbs.) X Wrench length (in.)

I should have added that to determine the force needed with any length of wrench, divide the Torque to be applied by the Length of the wrench...using the proper unit of measurement for length (feet or inches).

Force applied (lbs.) = Torque (ft-lbs or in-lbs) / Wrench length (feet or inches)
