Back in Sept of last year I hydroplaned my 72 small block coupe. I slid into the rear of another vehicle impacting on the front passenger side of my car. Anyways I have had to replace the whole front clip and it looks really good now. The problem I have now is that I fired her up yesterday and discovered that there is something wrong with the water pump pulley. The pulley is tilted backwards on the top and is rubbing on the neck of the water pump. It very slight and the car runs fine except for a rubbing noise... that's how I found the problem. Anyways I had already removed the mechanical fan and clutch which they look undamaged. And I have since replaced the damaged stuff with a new dewitts radiator and electric fan setup. Has anyone ever dealt with this before? Is the problem as simple as a new water pump? or could there be a problem with the pulley and I just need to remove, inspect and reinstall???
You're screwed. Sell that parts car, and get a real Vette. Come to think of it, I am in need of a '72 parts car. Call me and we'll work out the details.
Seriously, maybe pull the pulley off, and get it on a flat surface like a counter top. See if it even sits flat on the belt side. Then, lay a level across the top, and assuming the counter is level, you should be able to see if the mounting flange is level with the V-rib side. Rotate the level around so you can check thoroughly.
You've probably bent the water pump flange also. You'd be better off to replace them both and be done with it.
If it hit hard enough to move the flange back, it probably bent the shaft and pulley. Replace them both so you don't end up with your new fan through your new radiator-or hood.
