Default Petrol in engine oil?

I have found that I have a 3rd more oil on the dipstick above max level, the oil seems very thin, also smells of petrol, so petrol must be getting in there, how would this happen?, iam thinking piston rings worn, getting down between piston and clylinder?

Iam buying a new engine, so doesnt matter too much, just keen to know how its happening

cheers

Sometimes a broken fuel pump diagram can leak into the crank case. You should check the pump.

OH, and I love Scotland. Are they playing at Troon and Turnbury yet?

I HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN ON A SMALL BLOCK BACK IN THE '70'S.
IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE DIAPHRAM IN THE FUEL PUMP HAD CRACKED WHICH WILL ALLOW FUEL TO GET INTO THE OIL PAN.

CHECK IT AND LET ME KNOW IF THIS IS THE PROBLEM.

GOOD LUCK!!

Yep. Replace your fuel pump. Also, you need to get an oil flush kit, and perform it, along with a new oil change, and maybe another one in 500 miles.

Keep an eye open for leaks, and check the oil you drain for metal. If the oil was compromised at all, the bearings may have suffered excessive wear.

Default Me too

Had a similar problem recently, (1/3)fuel tank emptied in to the sump, only I have a Holley blue electric fuel pump. Put the problem down to syphoning thru a stuck float on the Webers.

DB, can you give me a bit more info on the "oil flush kit" I am not familiar with them and while I drained the sump and refilled with fresh oil, concerned that might not be enough.

there is a new oil leak!, seems to be coming from the main seal at the crank

It's easy. Just go to a local parts store, and ask them for help finding an oil flush product. You simply empty it into the crankcase with new oil, and let it run for a bit. Then drain it, and then fill with new oil again.

How good is it to have an interest (our vettes) and a Forum that enables Dave in Scotland, DB in the States and me in Australia to chew the fat.

Thanks DB, I will give that a try. I think I had better start looking out for oil leaks too. I guess that the fuel could soften the lips on the seals?

Yeah the fuel is bad for the rubber and cork seals. Mainly the front, rear, and oil pan seals.

Are you sure the problem wasn't just from flooding the engine while attempting to start? Have you had any recent malfuctions/difficulties where you may have flooded the engine? If so, I would change the oil and filter and re-assess.

Not saying it couldn't be the pump, however.

That much fuel in the oil is from a ruptured fuel pump diaphragm. If you have run the engine like that, you need to drop the pan and check your bearings - gasoline in the oil will destroy a set of bearings almost immediately.

Lars

You sure know how to ruin a guy’s day.
I have a 9 quart Morroso sump on the LS7 as well as a 3 quart accusump so I am hoping the contamination won’t be as bad given the larger volume of oil and the very brief period the engine ran with it.
But I am still worried.
