Default underhood paint.

Bought new sound deadening for underbonnet. I flatted underneath, gave it 3 coats of spray grey primer and 3 coats of matt black. After a couple of days the paint started to flake and peel back in 3 places exposing the bare surface. Any of you gents know what this could be.

Thanks .

Jamie

Did you use a high temperature paint or a regular paint? It gets hot under there so if it was regular paint, chances are it is just getting cooked off due to engine temps.

I don't know if heat is the problem. I've used Rustoleum, black satin, several times and have never had this problem. I'd be more inclined to think the surface was not properly prepared/cleaned, especially with all layers of paint coming off so quickly.

I flatted with wet and dry underneath after removing the old paint, soap and water cleaning, dried off. 24 hrs later painted with grey cannister spray paint then matt black finish. Peeled back in a few places just like peeling an orange. Is there a special cleaner for fibreglass that you use in the states as it points to the fact that it was'nt clean in those parts. The hood is off the car.

Thanks

Mine is painted with regular black automotive paint with 2 coats of clear....no problems from peeling or anything.... Got rid of the insulation...

Do you have an air conditioning? The spot above the AC compressor is infamous for absorbing oil slung off by the compressor. This can be very difficult to remove from the fiberglass.

Just something to check.

Got a stroked 496 with L88 hood and fresh air chamber, kinda crowded in there, but did the same as above. I don't miss the insulation, either. Might wish to check with a nearby body shop if they'll help with a suggestion.
