this may seem obvious but please explain exactly what you used and how "dimpled" the header so I too won't damage the coating. thanks everyone for their input.
I emailed Hedman and told them about the problem and asked should I dimple it. Hopefully they will reply and I will have it in writing so if and when it starts rusting we can address the issue. Hopefully they will take notice and fix the issue. I like the Hedmans, I have them on a couple of my other rides and they have held up really well.
I installed Hedman Elites on my 79 without any of the above issues. Didn't even need to pull the starter. Maybe my 79 was wrecked at some point in history???

When I dimpled my headers I marked the area with a Sharpee. Then removed them and laid a piece of sturdy pipe on the header where I wanted the dimple. Wacked the pipe with a hammer twice and it was all good. For a coated header I would wrap the pipe in rag.
took your advice. Called Summit and ordered a set of Dynomax coated headers. Came today. wrong part #. Called them back. Correct set on the way in the morning. Stand by. if these fit w/o problems I'll post the Dynomax part #.
I really like the Headman collector ball style joint better than the flat but we'll see.
When installing my headman ceramic headers i had the same problem with hitting... I installed new motor and tranny mounts and now i can measure the clerance with a feeler gauge!! good thing i never threw it out when i converted to an msd ignition!!!
P.S. If your going to "dimple" them, try it this way... cut a piece of wood with a small curve then place it where you want the indent. using a c clamp and protecting the non dimple side, slowly turn the clamp and the curved wood will make the indent look like it was made at the factory!.

The Dynomax part number of the headers I have is #86008 but I bought mine a while ago. I will be watching to see if Dynomax has new ones now. The Summit price is a little higher now than when I bought them, but still not a bad price at $316. The gaskets and bolts looked a little chincy to me, so I upgraded both. Let us know what you think of the quality of the ceramic finish too. Minor flaws and imperfections were an issue back when I bought mine, especially where all the primaries come together.
I don't have any clearance problem with Dynomax headers. Does everyone with this clearance problem have Hedman Elite headers? If not, what other headers have this clearance problem? CFers thinking about installing headers should take note.
Lots of clearence until I went to a Steeriods system but I ground their bracket to accomodate the headers. I am using Earl's graphite header gaskets with great results, not a leak to be found, just retighten them after a few heat cycles.

Had to dimple my hedmans as well...used a large diameter socket and a mallett.. worked fine with no damage to the coating. Theyve also been on there for about 8 years and no damage to the idler arm in that time either.
