weirdness!
Ok so i changed my timing chain, put the nice new chrome timing chain cover on, got my new harmonic balancer on and pulleys. I bought a new chrome water pump from ecklers, and did a test fit, i had it bolted up with the pulley on the water pump and for some reason beyond me the pulleys on the harmonic balancer and the pulley on the water pump now are way to close to eachother. They even touch!. Now i thought maybe there was a shipping problem and they sent me the wrong water pump. So i disassembled everything again and put all the orginal things on and presto!..... they still are too close to eachother. The crank shaft isnt broken or anything.. so what in the crap could have happened.. any ideas?
Just another problem for the money pit!

Pulleys are the same ones that were on the pump before.. the only change was the actaully pump

I thought the same, so i attepted to put it on the other way but theres no way the hoses would work.. then to top it off the bolt pattern doesnt work the other way as well... so it can only bolt on right.. thats about where im at now.
heh yea another thing, i tryed putting all the orginal parts back on and its still to close.. I honestly am at a loss on this one i tryed just about everything i can think of.. There has to be an explaination for it right?
Is the damper on correctly? Is it not fully seated and maybe cocked a bit? Try rotating the engine (manually or with starter) to see if the 'gap' between them changes. That's my guess....
The bolt hole are symetrical so even if i unbolt, rotate and rebolt.. its still the same
Sounds to me like you new-from-Eckler's water pump is mismachined. Compare the distance between the water port attach bolt holes and the pump snout center on your old and new pumps. I'm guessing the Eckler's pump dimensions will be shorter. Good ol' Chinese quality....
I thought he said the pulleys were touching, not the water pump pulley touching the balancer.
I don't know if that even CAN touch.

Seems like someone else had this same problem not too long ago. Not sure what the fix ended up to be. You might try a search, and see what comes up. Cheers..

Obviously since you said you put the old stuff back on and the problem still existed, the condition must have been there before and you just did not notice???? It is ok for the pulleys to be close as long as they dont touch. Or may be you can get a smaller water pump pulley with the same configuration and get different belts.

I did figure that it wouldnt be a problem but i want to know what happened. The thing is that before i took the car apart they were spaced about 1-1 1/2 inches apart. And the belts are much to loose now.. There has to be a reason why its like that now and not the way it was.
Can you post some very detailed pics of the way it is now from all sides? Sometimes we can see things, or notice things that might not be too obvious to someone else. The more eyes the better.

Dohoooo....
That's gotta be it.
