69 400/427 vert. I have bought a new speedometer cable and have checked the working of the cable with a drill, and it moves the needle on the speedometer. I have checked the gear on the transmission and it looks fine. connect the cable to the transmission and it still does not work.. any suggestions?
since you put the tranny end into a drill, it may be possible that that end is not wanting to go into the end of the speedo gear. it does not take much deformation of the cable for that end to be difficult to slip into the gear. hope that is all . . .
Do you mean there is a gear inside the transmission that could be pushed back ? I can pull the metal and plastic gear out of the transmission that attaches to the speedo cable.
unlikely; the gear in the tranny is metal and the driven gear is plastic. you can pull the driven gear out and take a look . . .
The driven gear (the one the cable screws into) is plastic. Maybe it just gave up the ghost. Comes out real easy. one bolt. wiggle the driven gear holder out and look at the teeth.
Recheck the speedo gear where the cable is engaged. That square-drive hole may be worn out....and that could have been your only problem. Remove the gear from the tranny, engage that gear on the cable end, hold the cable firm and see if you can turn the gear anyway. If you can, replace the gear--it's worn out.
