Default L46 new carburetor

My old carburetor has given up, and I need a new one. I want my engine as stock as possible .....I think. I tried to find the right part for my engine (1969 L46 350/350) on SummitRacing and Amazon.com, but I'm a bit confused witch one is the right one. This one on summit http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
but it says it fits "1966-73 Chevrolet and GMC vehicles with 327-427 CID V8". Something tells me that this is going to be a bit too universal....?

Here's one from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/HOLLEY-647783-...tive&carId=002
But the Compatibility Chart says it does not fit on HP engines. The L46 is the HP design of the 1969 small-block. But in my books the 300HP and 350HP has the same carburetor.

So you see I'm a bit confused here.....

Can someone clear this out?

If you want to keep it stock you want a 7029207 for your L-46. Date code to match. The good news is that carb 7029207 was made well into the 90's as the service replacement for a whole lot of applications. You could look for one of those with any date code as the next best thing, having the correct part number at least.

I can't tell what those rebuilds are. Edelbrock made a 1901 which would have worked fine. Summit sold a ton of those and I think was selling them refurbished. That may be what those are. Lie I said I can't really tell I used one on my 70 L-46 for a while.

It is very rare that a Quadrajet "has given up". What is wrong with the stock carburetor?

If you simply want to change carburetor styles (whatever for?) I will buy the core from you. I'll give you $25 and pay shipping.

Easy money.

If you want to stay as close to stock as possible, follow Dennis's advice. I have 2 '70 L46's, and the correct '69 GM carb, 7029207 works fine on either of my 2 cars. More importantly, this carb is plumbed for your setup, and are easy to tune. You can find them on that auction site all the time, as there are several good candidates there now..........Dave

Unless you have some worn-out or damaged parts on your old Q-jet, or there is a lot of slop in the throttle shafts, just rebuild it. Jets and rods can still be bought and NAPA sells floats and rebuild kits. The additional benefit is that you will learn a lot about the Q-jet in the process. What could be better? $50 for some parts plus quality "together" time for you and your carb! {Feel the love?}

Or you can send it to Lars.
Might as well say it before someone else does!

When I said I would like the engine to remain stock, I didn't mean "NCRS-stock". I would like a carburetor that doesn't change the engine "personality". The current carburetor is a #7028213, so it belongs to a 327.
The point is that I have an appointment with the authorities in 14 days, so I need a new one fast. I live in Norway, so shipping takes time.

What about the Q-jet rebuilt by Holley on Amazon.com:http://www.amazon.com/HOLLEY-647783-...f=pd_rhf_p_t_1

$229.99, that's the price of two tanks of fuel here in Norway . The exchange rates between dollar and Norwegian krones are laughable nowadays.

Shall I go for it, or does it need re-jetting or something?

Norway

Just about all of the Q-jets ever made are basically the same in design and specifications. The differences are primarily the jetting and rods with some minor differences and configuration changes thrown in. If you recalibrate the Q-jet you already have [along with cleaning it up and clearing all the passages, changing the float and doing a general rebuild (per kit instructions), it should work just as well as a different part number that is supposed to be tuned to your car. Unless an expert like Lars [et al] does the work, one that you set up to proper specs is likely to be better than anything else you find (not to mention $229 less expensive).

The Holley reman Quadrajets are junk. Holley does their best to destroy the metering ability of the carburetor. If you need something quick you would be better off getting a 6210 series Holley spread bore. It is a direct replacement for the 'Jet. It is no where near as good, it could get you up and running until you can get the 'Jet rebuilt.

Any auto parts store should be able to get the parts for this rebuild. Give them the number off the carb.

Being over seas you should have started this process a month ago.

Someone has been there earlier. One of the primary rods is broken and the corresponding jet is damaged by a screwdriver. And a bushing or gasket on the power piston is also broken. Maybe there's more.

BigBlockk, I've followed your advise. Ordered a Holley 6210 from SummitRacing this morning. $393.95, may cost me another tank of fuel though....
I'm sure you guys don't belive me when I say this, but one gallon of petrol costs $10 in Norway

Hope you don't have a stock, air cleaner. It won't fit that carb. Now that I think of it, if you have a stock small block hood, you better find an aftermarket air cleaner with a low profile filter, because any air cleaner for that carb sits on top, unlike sitting down and around like with the q-jet.

Several members have the 6210. It is a direct replacement for the Q-jet. Thestock air cleaner will fit also.
The 1971 has the same bonnet as mine, so then it would fit ....or not?

It's difficult to know what to do when you get conflicting opinions. I will say again it will not fit a stock 68-72 hood, period.

Look at those fuel bowls in the pic on that holley. Then look at your Q-jet. Need I say more?

The stock air cleaner will not sit down low enough to clear the stock hood. Use an air cleaner that sits higher to accomadate the holley, and you'll need a LT1,BB, or L88 hood

I definately see your point. So I need a air cleaner that has a flat bottom?
Any suggestions anyone? What about the height under hood, the carb doesn't look THAT high to me?

Anyhow; the carb is already shipped, too late for adding an air cleaner. But I have some friends around here that may have something...

you might be able to get a air cleaner element that is a not as high and an aftermarket air cleaner

I run a 6210 on my 70 L-46 for awhile. Its a great carb otherwise.

I also had to adjust my vacuum fitting and power brake vacuum line to make room for those holley fuel bowls.
