Actually, if you run a parallel line of exactly the same gauge wire and tie the ends at the same termination points, the ammeter should read one-half of the actual current being drawn through both wires. If you want the gauge to ready correctly on its scale (within reason, anyway), just create a new junction point of those two wires exactly one-half the distance between the present tie points and connect one wire from the ammeter there (it doesn't matter which of the ammeter leads you move...just keep the other one at its original location). It should ready pretty accurately there.

Default Update

Finally found time to tear apart the ammeter. Discovered it had been repaired once before. One of the reasons the needle was pegged is that someone previously had not pushed the needle far enough onto the shaft and it had jumped the detent at +40 amps. It was just barely on the shaft when I got the gauge to the work bench. I guess my banging it around while replacing the oil pressure line caused it to jump. Also discovered the wire inside had been spliced once before and the solder joint was not good. Remade the solder joint and put it all back together making sure the needle was installed correctly. It now seems to be working fine.

Thanks to all who helped.
