Default New driveshaft hits floor

Hey guys,

I've upgraded the tranny to a 700R4 and installed the new driveshaft.

Unfortunately it hits the floor pan. I'm guessing that I now have to cut out my floor pan to make room for this?

I've already cut the foil and the riveted foil holding clips.

Anyone else have to do this?

Some Pics.

It looks like the drive shaft should be a little longer. That way it would fit easily into the wider part of the tunnel closer to the tranny. Just MO from the pics. Where did you get the driveshaft?

Also with the yoke extended that far out, you have a good chance for vibration.

I had some minor rubbing too. Nothing like your picture is showing though. It does look like your driveshaft is 1/2 to 3/4 in short.

I agree with the rest - your driveshaft is too short - 1 finger width from seal to back of yoke is all you need. It also looks like you are offset a littel further towards the passenger side than I would expect but its hard to tell in such closeups.

The yoke coupling is not installed in the tranny output housing far enough (too much seal surface showing)...BUT, even if you did have a longer driveshaft, you still wouldn't have enough clearance in the tunnel. You still will have to grind out some material to allow the U-joint trunions to have clearance to turn freely. You can see the area in your tunnel where the joint bearings are supposed to be located (with the original tranny). Those clearances will have to be extended backwards a couple of inches...PLUS the driveshaft is about an inch too short.

Hey............ Not to hijack, But I am doing a 200r4 swap on my 72 and also have 1 5/8 hanging out But NOT hitting anything TH400 drive shaft and a 350 yoke. I was told By (THOSE in THE KNOW) that as long as the yoke engages the bushing in the tail shaft IT SHOULD be fine, since there is no in and out movement in the driveline with a solid mounted rearend. BUT..... I would love to have it perfect
HOPEFULLY I am just being worried for nothing It seems that if the shaft was 3/4" longer it would be perfect and still allow for easy driveshaft removal . Is there a stock drive shaft that is a little longer than the shaft for a th400?

If the splines in the shaft have full engagement, excess journal 'showing' is not a problem.

Its tough to tell in the picture, but that looks pretty far out. That strap yoke looks different than mine w/ the nuts.

Hey, I just looked at the 1st picture of the driveshaft on the bench. That yoke also looks pretty long. That may be fine.

Doesnt solve your rubbing problem tho!

i have a th350 and only about 2 inch showing on the shaft. hopefully someone who has done a 700 swap will chime in so you know if this is normal or not. i am thinking that also if you have done this swap it means you have put in a new crossmember which might have a different height. is the rubber mount at the rear support the correct one cause it might make a height difference with your transmission and thats why you are scrubbing out. also back to HGM,s point....what crossmemeber are you using??? dont you need the round tubular style for a 700?

I have a 700R4 in my 78 C3 (behind my 540 BBC); with a Denny's drive shaft, with the right measurement, so it ain't too short.

however, I did have to figure out how to lower the rear transmission mount to alleviate tunnel interference. I also had to relocate the parking brake cable pulley.

Mounting the 700R4 to top of the the trans crossmember (TH400-style) was problematic. The rear of the trans is too high. I ended up using the rear trans mount location on the trans case itself, not the trans mount on the tail shaft housing.

It required using a TH350-like trans mount bracket, the one that bolts onto the tabs on the trans cross-member, extended off of the front of the trans cross-member. Earlier C3 TH400 cross-members don't have the requisite mounting tabs, however they are easily welded on to the cross-member.

works like a champ.

Well I gave the driveshaft place a call and they say it sounds like it is out too far also, however, since it is an independent suspension and there will not be any travel or back and forth movement, it shouldn't be a problem.

Also the shaft is sticking out 1 1/4 inches since it is a 4 inch shaft, I still have 2 3/4 inches if the yoke in the tranny.

Also since the shaft is sticking out 1 1/4 inches and the back end of the joint is 2 1/2 inches past the space where the old joint was, I looks like I will have to cut the floor regardless.

Thanks for all the input guys.
