Any tips for me on removing my 78 steering box since I want to send my box to Gary as well. Gary suggested a fork to separate the pitman arm from the balancing value but I am afraid I will damage the value. How did you separate the two?
If you haven't already, check everything else out first. Start with the rag joint. All of the steering components can contribute to a sloppy steering feel, not just the box. If everything else is ok then you can try adjusting the box. It is best done on a bench with the box out of the car using an inch pound torque wrench (0 to 30 inch/lb is most accurate for this) . If you go that far, you may as well rebuild it if necessary, or at least, replace the grease with fresh and install new seals. There are a lot of threads on how to do this. These boxes are very rugged and unless Bubba messed with it before you got the car it should be adjustable and/or rebuildable.
Thank you for your reply, yes I thought ajustment can be made. I thought I have read up on this long time ago but never had to adjust or rebuild one be for. It'll be fun to work on this, I've rebuilded everyting else but a steering box. Just need to find info. Thank you. (74 L82 4 speed)

I would use a tie rod puller over a fork. The fork will work but it will rip the boot on the CV.
