While removing the speedo cable on my 81 Auto tranny to replace the “O” ring seal on the speedo driven gear, I removed the retainer bold then tried to unscrew the cable (big mistake, should have done the cable first.) The driven gear popped out still attached to the cable. I cannot find the retainer. Does anyone know what it looks like or where I could get one? It sure would help to know what I’m looking for.

Reason: Add year and transmission type
There is nothing that holds the driven gear in the adapter. It just slips in. There is a small seal in the cable end of the adapter that's help in with a small round wire retainer. IT goes around the shaft of the driven gear.
There is just the speedo assembly retainer, that bolts to the tranny, that holds the cable assembly and gear in place. Mine seems to always leaked some but a put a hair bigger o-ring in last time which seems to have helped.
Its the "speedo assembly retainer" that I think I'm missing. Any idea what it looks like?
It's a sort of "Y" shaped clamp that's about an inch or so long. One end has a hole in it for the bolt to go thru that attaches to the tranny and the other end is the Y portion which goes around the assembly to hold it in place.

Mine is now leaking after I replaced the speedo cable (700R4). Same type set-up.
Question is: does replacing just the O-ring usually help, or does it also leak from the shaft bushing area, meaning you have to replace the entire assembly ($70 assembly vs $0.50 O-ring).

Appreciate any experience on that one.

As I mentioned above, I used a very slightly bigger o-ring than OEM's and that seemed to help.
