Any chance a distro wire is loose? If you have HEI and one of the wires to the distro is loose, it could be the problem. I'm thinking it would be the wire to the coil or module.

I am going to tell you about a funny story that just happened to me this am. I was cruizing on the highway and the engine seemed to surge off and on. Got off the highway onto a local road to check it out and heard this knocking, sounded like a rod. Opened the hood and saw the steel braded line from the fuel pump to the carb moving back and forth, went around to the other side and saw the fuel pump moving in and out. The bolts for the pump were gone. Engine still ran however it seemed to surge on and off. Currently in the a local shop getting the new gaskets and bolts. WITH thread locker. LOL So check the fuel pump.
