Default Passing gear?

How does the passing gear engage on my 74?
Just read thread on cowl air flow ind., and it said a sw. on
gas peddle kicks it in. Mine will not engage. If this sw. does it,
were can I get new one? In put please.

Thanks glassman74

The switch is mounted to the area above the gas pedal. The gas pedal rod pushes the switch when you push down on thwe pedal to full throttle. Both the air dam door and the TH400 downshift solenoid are then actuated. If the switch is not being made then you can try to readjust it or replace it. Make sure you have 12volts to the swich and that it is being pushed enough to activate it first. You can each up and pull it out with your finger to see if it is working before you try to replace it.
Good luck

If the switch is working then maybe look into replacing the solonoid.

Make sure you have a Turbo 400 first... only the TH400 uses the electric kickdown switch on the gas pedal. If you have a Turbo 350 you have a kickdown cable attached to the carb throttle lever. If the carb has been swapped, many people leave the cable off and/or misadjusted and the tranny will not kick down. There is a procedure for adjusting the kickdown cable correctly just like there is a procedure for re-setting the switch on the TH400 cars.

Before you replace the switch at the top of the gas pedal rod be sure it is adjusted properly. the switch is self adjusting.

Reach up and push the tab sticking out of the switch with your thumb. Push up and toward the engine (push hard). When you hear a "snap", the switch is now in the self adjusting position. The next time you go to WOT it will self adjust and energize the cowl door solenoid and the trans kick down.

If you mess with the carb throttle linkage, gas pedal rod, etc. later on, it may get out of adjustment again. simple procedure to reset.

THIS REPLY IS FOR LARS....

Hi Lars, I just read your reply to this thread and would like to know where I can get a copy of the kickdown adjustment procedure for a TH300 auto tranny with OE Q-jet?
