I have a stock 75 L-82 and was also thinking about installing an MSD and looking where to install it. But I guess the real quesion is ----Is it worth the cost and aggravation? Noticable performance improvement?
There are other mfrs out there [Petronix, Crane, etc] as well. The multi-spark product has been available by Autotronic Controls (MSD parent company) since the early 1970's; I believe they were the first to produce. I've used them in all of my projects as they have always delivered great results. Your mileage may vary.
thinking of mounting my MSD ing and coil on the back of one of the front fenders. I've seen several pics with fabbed plates. Anyone mounted it directly to the fiberglass? Any probs? Also, I've seen where some of you have mounted them in the wiper well. Forgive my ignorance, but wouldn't this put it in direct exposure to rain? Surely they aren't completely waterproof. Thanks!
If you have not bought it yet don't. The anolag 6al models are very unrealiable. I had heard this and then experenced it for myself when the one that came with my crate engine worked for 3 cranks and then nothing. I would recommend the Crane digital or now MSD has a digital unit. I mounted the MSD unit inside the wheel well but I had the engine out, it may be harder to put it in there with the engine in I know it was very hard to get it out after it failed. I mounted the Crane unit I replaced it with in the glove box but they will also fit in the wiper tray. Good luck
Wow, that's odd- I've been daily driving one for over 10 years. No problems at all.
They're not waterproof, however, so don't expect to last if it's mounted where moisture can reach it. Mine is mounted in the passenger compartment.
My 6AL is on a shelf covered in dust. Been there since late '03.
If you are looking for a performance gain this aint it. Test upon test have shown NO decrease in ET and NO increase in MPH in 1/4 mile racing. I used mine on a '77 Pontiac Fornula and on a '72 Vega powered by a 350 Chev. In both cases it did nothing to improve the performance over a properly functioning HEI. Lotsa psychological horsepower at work with these.
my personal opinion is that I would not listen to anyone (sorry V-rod ) saying do not buy MSD. If you look at any real street/strip or serious bracket car racer, altered fuel etc. buys MSD...nobody makes a perfect piece of hardware. I have been going to the track for 4 years and 98% of anyone using something simular uses MSD.
I don't have a picture handy, but I put mine in the center compartment behind the drivers seat on my 68. Been there for about 3 years with no issues.
MPettus What a good idea. I am trying to finish a 69 Coupe and this has been driving me crazy. The compartment is some place I hadn't even considered. But it is close to the battery and heat won't be an issue. I installed Chrome Hookers with side pipes so getting at those wheel wells is an issue in itself...I like it

Not trying to debunk this statement, but if everyone uses them (and every racer does), then MSD, Crane, and all the others may have accomplished one of the biggest hoaxes ever. If you have seen any documentation on this, I would really like to see it as I'm always happy to save $200.00 when I can.
