my personal opinion is that I would not listen to anyone (sorry V-rod ) saying do not buy MSD. If you look at any real street/strip or serious bracket car racer, altered fuel etc. buys MSD...nobody makes a perfect piece of hardware. I have been going to the track for 4 years and 98% of anyone using something simular uses MSD.
What does the magic box do? How does it make you go faster? Can you site one example of anyone who reduced their ET or increased MPH just by using the MSD? I'll bet not and if anyone did, it is because their tune was not on. Use some type of ignition box / control as an insurance policy on a race car? Sure - I understand that, but your street / occasional strip car will see no gain -and we're talking about the 6AL and the like here.
Not trying to debunk this statement, but if everyone uses them (and every racer does), then MSD, Crane, and all the others may have accomplished one of the biggest hoaxes ever. If you have seen any documentation on this, I would really like to see it as I'm always happy to save $200.00 when I can.
I have used the MSD box three times on three different cars and I keep very detailed records.
'77 Firebird, 400 pontiac - HEI ign, 8.7:1 comp, 214/224/112 cam, q-jet - ran the same exact 1/4 time and mph.
'72 Vega, 350 chev - HEI ign, 11:1 comp, 230/239/110 cam, 750 holley dp - same et and mph.
'68 Camaro, 327 chev - points dist ign. 10:1 comp, 218/218/110 cam, 650 holley sprd bre - again no change.
It's cool if it's your cup 'o tea - no more for me.

Personally I never said it will make you go faster or increase your MPH. The main reason I installed one was because of the built in and plug in optipons. Rev limiter, NOS controller, auto timing retard, RPM switch etc.
I installed my MSD box in the fender well on the passenger side 6 months ago. I bought the MSD box new. The MSD box failed on my vette twice and the second time I had to be towed home. I sent the box back to MSD and what sad return service they have--3 weeks. I took the MSD system out of my car and now I am running with a stock dist. I found no difference in preformance. It was a waste of money. Spend your money on something else.

I agree with 76_Sting about the options that come with it, but after reading a little more into it, I really think I'm gonna put this 'upgrade' to the side for a bit and spend money elsewhere. For instance:
I bought the off road unit from MSD (it's waterproof) & mounted it in front of the radiator where it stays real cool. MSD normal units are not waterproof & will fail if they get wet. MSD doesn't like to tell anyone about this & you can not seal the unit yourself bacause it need to breath.
