Default Stuck steering column

On my '72, I am attempting to remove the steering column to replace it, and it is quite stuck at the end of the column where it goes into the upper rag joint bracket. I have used PB on it several times, and was told that you don't want to pull on the wheel in the cockpit to try and get it loose, that the column is designed to 'come apart' and you don't what that to happen. Is that true? An way is the best way to extract it? I tried seperating the rag joint so that the upper bracket came with the column but it would not separate from the lower joint either and I was in fear of bending the lower bracket. Thanks.

I'm surprised you cant seperate at the rag joint. If you want the shaft to come out of the splined part of the flange then in the slot genlty tap in a chissel of the right size. This will spread the flange just enough for the shaft to slide out.
