Vacuum Filter?????

The manual and the catalogs I have looked at say there is a vacuum filter (in addition to the check valve) on the hose running to the intake manifold on my 1970 454. I can't find one locally. The one on there when I bought the car is compleyely hollow and may have been for some time.

Is this filter really needed?

Most vendors carry it. On my 330hp '70 I don't use it at all. That filter is the first thing off the manifold and the filter mesh inside it probably got sucked into the engine a long time ago.

Yes. It prevents degrading vacuum hose particles, debris, etc. from getting into the engine intake and valves.
