So I'm driving down the road this morning in my '71, top down, minding my own business, when all of a sudden the wiper door pops up for no apparent reason. I got to work, shut the car off and pushed it back down. Then I started the car back up and it popped back up. Any suggestions as to where to start a diagnosis for my wayward wiper door?

On the passenger side, the wiper needs to press down on the vacuum switch to signal that the door can close. If the switch is worn, has moved, or is maladjusted (or the wipers are), the door will pop open as you have indicated.
Try pushing down on the passenger side wiper (car running) to see if the door will close. DO NOT do it with your fingers, you would be surprised how much force the door has!!

Just a reminder... the vacuum holds the wiper door and headlight doors closed. So you're looking for a leak in the actuator, or the relay, or the solenoid under the right wiper arm as has been suggested. The lack of vacuum makes the actuator think it's been signaled to open.

My wiper door closes on the wipers and crushes them unless I use the override switch. I figured out the problem a few months ago, but forgot the fix. So I'll have to re-diagnose. Ughhhhh.
Stroker, I have tried the override switch with no luck. I can manually open if I remove the grate. It will stay up, and will return to the down poistion when I turn the wiper switch off. Is the control valve the problem?

With the engine running remove the small hose from the wiper door relay...the door should pop up.Let us know if it does or doesnt.
