If it's like the alarm in my 70, it's trigger on when someone opens the door (if the alarm switch is in the on position) or when someone opens the hood. Not very sophisticated. Maybe by 74 the alarm was improved. You should think about getting a wiring diagram.
In the 70, the relay that actuates the alarm is in the compartment where the car jack is.
