Default washer fluid pump how does it work

HI

I finally got my wipers fixed on the 74, but for some reason the washer pump will still pump w/o the switch depressed. what exactly is supposed to happen when the switch is pushed inside the car to spray the fluid. is the electoromagnet inside the pump unit supposed to switch on to turn the pump or off? also i have a blue and a yellow wire going to the pump is this correct and which side do they go on or does it matter?

THANKS

BigJim, you can spend a lot of time trying to figure out how this electro mechanical thing works and try to fix the various springs and steel pull rods to work properly. Just buy a complete replacement pump, cheap, 15 mins of work and its over. I tried to do the same thing you are trying to figure out and after removing it three times, pulling my hair out, finding the lost spring that dropped on the floor it didn't work any better. Just make sure that the electrical connections are correct both on the dash(71) and the pump itself.
