Default Charging problem

I Need Help. I have a 69 and my Amp meter is pegged at positive 40 Amps. I have installed a new alternator. When I plugged in the connector in the top of the alternator I noticed that the brown wire with a white strip was getting really hot to the touch. Does anyone know were this wire goes? Their is 12 volts coming from this wire.(that doesnt seem right to me why would it be supply the alternator with 12 volts?)

Sounds like the alternator is 'stuck' in the charging mode. Could you have reversed the wiring or the connector on the unit? Did you get an exact replacement? Perhaps the wiring locations on the one you got is not the same as what you had.

The alternator is new (from autozone) and is the second one that I have put on. the brown and white wire is on post 1 and the orange (red) is on post 2. I unplugged the brown and white wire and the amp meter dropped to 20amps.
