Having a run of bad luck. My 76 sat outside while I was building a new garage. First the brakes went. Now I can't get the key out of the ignition. It is a 4 speed. No problem shifting. The steering wheel moves from left to right but doesn't lock. Is it the cable or something in the column? If it is the cable can I take it off and free it?
I disconnected the cable from the lever on the steering column. Both the cable and lever were frozen. The cable will go down now but must be pulled up. Likewise with the lever on the steering column. I can move it without the cable attached. When the cable is reattached to the lever and shifted out of reverse the cable goes down but when you put it back in reverse it doesn't come back. I can pull it back up (with a little effort) and can get the ignition locked and key out. Is there a spring in the steering column to make the lever go up? There must be something I'm doing wrong. I've only worked at it from the top (under the brake vacuum)..
No spring anywhere, your interlock cable, should extend app. 4" and retrack,
when you shift into/out of reverse, (without binding ) pull both ends free it should slide easily,
I suspect your cable is binding internally,
if the column moves ok by hand.

Just remove the cable and fasten the lever on the column into position.
Give the cable a good soaking of penetrant and put it back,or just leave it off.
