I have a 1976 corvette that looks amazing with one flaw, spider crack. Without striping the whole car and painting it, I was wondering if there is anyone who knows touch up the spider cracks?
Nothing you can do except what you already know...strip, prep, and re-paint. Sorry, but that's the sad truth. I myself have bad spider cracks and am saving for a new paint job.
If you had just a couple, I'd suggest a cosmetic 'fix'. If your paint is 2-stage [color and clear coat], I don't know of a fix. If it is just single stage color coat, you might buy a bottle of that 'scratch blender' stuff and try it. It is an abrasive material that scavenges a bit of paint from the surface you 'polish' and causes it to sink into the cracking. It wouldn't hurt much. Yours might be too far gone to even consider going to that much trouble. Good luck.
AH YES!! been there doing that right now. just be lucky its the paint and not the fiberglass. My 79 would be beautiful if it werent for the original paint. Im on the fence with "repaint or original, repaint or original".... but if it really bothers you then save up and repaint her! its only original once and 30+ years old too
The cracks do not appear to be entirely stress related, although headlight openings are prime areas for that. Looks like way too much paint thickness previously applied, or problems with the paint formulation.
This is why we strip off the all the old paint, instead of just adding more primer/paint on top. Can you tell us if this is the orginal factory paint? I am guessing Not.
A lot unless you choose to do it yourself. I got an estimate of $5,000. The painter would take $2,500 to prep and repair any body damage, and the other $2500 to paint vehicle.
