Default 1980 oil pressure gauge problem..Help!

Hi Guys,
I was driving to work and I noticed that my oil pressure gauge was fluttering and as i drove it would drop to Zero or stay around 20... it normally sits at 40.

I'm here at work so I'm a bit nervous to drive it now...
anyone have any ideas on what may be the cause?

it seems to run normal.
Though the idle seems to be running a bit high.

thx

It could be the sensor.

Just make sure you check oil level before you drive it.

Hell, I went to check the oil level and next to no oil

now I'm worried I may have done some damage...

I went to Wal-Mart to pick up some oil on my break, filled it and pressure is back up.

What should I be looking out for now?? I don't drive it often so that is a good thing.

it seems to be running fine but should I drive it slower than normal.

any advice? TIA

what a noob thing to do...i should have checked the oil weekly on this old vette.

Metal flakes in the oil is an indication of bearing damage. If your oil pressure is back up to what it was orginally, then hope for the best.

I dont think you did any damage since it still read pressure and if you didnt far. I would just find out what is the cause of the loss of oil.

Thx guys,
I don't have a large oil pool where my vette sit so that is a relief, but even if the dip stick reads dry.. doesn't the oil pan still have a few quarts still in it?

I'm going to change oil/filter tomorrow, I suspect the shop I brought the vette in for an oil change... were not sure of what filter to put on due to the different engine options for that year.. which worried me that day but i told them the vin engine number was 6 for the L-82.

and they assured me it was all good. so i think it may be the oil filter... i'll post once i find out.

L-48 and L-82 engines used the same oil filter. Old AC number was either PF-25 or PF-35. Get creative and put a PF-832 on there. ( that's a 2 quart filter- 2x as long as a PF-35, but it still fits)

Listen for loud *** noises. If none, don't worry, be happy. It will let you know when it's done.
