I'm not sure what it's called but there is a spring loaded catch that falls into the notches as you pull it up...making that fast clicking noise. Does it still make that noise? If not then the spring might be broken. If it does, then the tip of that catch might have broken and the nub is too big to fall into the notches.

Sounds like your nubby tooth stopper thing is broken or the springs gone bad.
Does the button return when you push it? If so then its the tooth.
