Default Quarter panel interior-problems

Hello

Anyone had this problem? There is a gap between the quarter panel and the windows frame. (see pic)

I bought the car disassembled inside, so I really dont know how it was before. The rear window frame is new, but the quarter panel is an old one.

Any thoughts?

Something doesn't look right.... I don't have a '75 and can't quite figure out what it is, but the AIM should point you toward the problem.

I have checked my AIM, and I can not see how this could be installed any different...

I don't know anything about 75s. But, from what I can see the interior quarter trim seems to be in the right place since the hole for the bolt for the shoulder belt seems to be in the right place.
Just what is the white material we're seeing between the quarter trim and the window trim?
Regards,
Alan

PS: Is the quarter trim warped in some way? 33 year old plastic can act pretty strange.

The white material you see, is the "plate" that is surrounding the rear window. You can see the screw from the rear window frame also. I have just installed the rear window also, and this was a perfect fit.

When I looked in the AIM, the quarter panel was supposed to be installed so the screw from the window frame is hidden. Not like mine, where I can se the screw.

If i push the quarter panel in place, so I dont get that "white stripe", then the screw hole right under the window, is way off its position... and the rear window trim just under the window, will not fit.

I bought this car "in pieces", so I have no idea how it was before the disassembly. But the quarter-piece looks good, no cracks or so. I will try to fit the other side tomorrow to check if there is the same problems there.

Thanks

KT,
Can you 'pad-out' behind the rear part of the quarter trim so it's forced to be closer to the window frame, but the front of the quarter trim stays where it is?
I'd love to see a picture of a car with the correct fit.
Regards,
Alan

My 74, with original quarter panels, isn't quite as bad as yours but the moldings still don't come together. They are a really poor fit in an area that's pretty visible. I've tried padding the backs to minimize the gap but you can only move the pieces in so far because of the horizontal molding that goes across the bottom of the window. GM should have done a better job of this. Sorry for the lack of help.

I'm wondering if some of those components were 'scavenged' from other cars of different years. If you check out one of the aftermarket parts books, you can see which years had identical parts [for those pieces] and which are similar, but will not be identical. I suspect that kind of problem.

My 75 fit is terrible also, I'd have been embarrassed if I was a GM salesman in 75 trying to sell one of these things. The hood to fender match sucks also. Mine isn't as bad as yours along the side though. Seems like the side piece is being held out away from the car a little, the gap at the bottom window trim piece is at an angle.

My 74 is exactly the same way. I've been messing with it since I've got it apart to replace the rear window trim but can't get it much closer. I'll probably end up just spray painting those pieces showing to match the interior.

I hate to say it but my '75 isn't much better. It is just how they are/were. Nice quality job by GM.

My '73 is not as bad as this but it's not a good fit either. When I get a chance, I plan to remove some of the interior trim and paint the crack to match the trim. As my interior is black it should make the situation much less noticeable.

Thanks for all the reply.

I am glad I am not the only one who have this problem.

I think I can get the crack a littlebit smaller, and then maybe use som sort of paint or something. I think that it would be much better if I can paint it in same color as interior, rather than have this white stripe.

I don't know if there is a difference between early C3 quarter trim panels with the pop-out rear windows and those with non-removeable rear windows but it might be worth checking into. Maybe yours is an early one?
