Well I have the one piece oil pan gasket. Should I still put some RTV on both the oil pan side and the block side? Both side on the timing chain cover too?
Thanks,
Bill

I am not very familiar with Corvettes (yet) but I used Yamabond #4 on two of my Porsche 928s when replacing the oil pan gasket and it works great. A little bit messy to work with but it will not leak again for a long time. You can buy it at your local Yamaha dealer.

You can put a dab at the four corners where the gasket meets the rear main arch and the front arch where the gasket meets the timing cover.
I just did this myself!! 3 days later (thats how long it took me) and NO LEAKS! i used the fel-pro permaseal one piece. blue with bolts and little thingys that hold the gasket and pan in place! im getting very confident with my mechanical ability now thanks to fel-pro. everything i use from them works!
no the directions say not to use anything on it. to use it dry. thne the white sheet that comes with it states as above to use something little in the corners.

I have used mine dry and haven't had any leaks, but the silicon might provide a future safety net in case the gasket loosens from age and the corners start seeping...then the silicon might come in handy.
Just make sure that the oil pan mounting rail is flat (not deformed from earlier bolts being overtorqued). If you see that the rail is dented around the bolt holes, you need to turn the pan over on some smooth concrete (or work table) and use a flat metal item and hammer to flatten the surface out. Once you do that, put on the Fel-pro gasket (and dabs of RTV), and apply the correct level of torque to the pan bolts, you should be sealed well. {Overtorquing the pan bolts is probably the leading cause of leaky oil pans.}

The one piece felpro gasket with the tabs to hold it in place seems to be the preferred gasket from reading other posts. That in itself is probably a good start to a leak free oil pan.
And the other suggestion of not overtorquing the bolts is a good one too.
w/ 1pc felpro ... just a tiny bit of silicone in corners ... NONE elsewhere. As said ... ensure everything is straight & true & torqued properly ... this very important.
Also ... ensure everything very very clean ... get in there with bright light and reading glasses if need be ... cleanliness very important.
FYI ... you do NOT need a racing gasket. Following 2 felpro are 1pc NON race pan gaskets for 2pc rms sbc blocks; available at local parts house.
OS34509T fit sbc C3 thru 1974
OS34510T fit sbc C3 75 up and most sbc aftermarket pans even if on pre75.
if you use a sealant on pan/block rails w/ sbc 1pc pan gasket ... it'll cause the gasket to shift ALOT ... it'll spit it off the rail ... install dry except for corners.
