So, was trying to fix the power steering on my '81, a leak to be precise. When I went to take it for a test drive, something odd happened. The current assumption is that the part we put back on was put back together wrong. I'll be taking the part to the shop. Rather than explain what happened, I made a video and put it on Youtube, so, here is the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oSbBKExtZQ
looks like you just need to adjust the valve so the power assist is balanced. behind the dust cover on the end of the valve there is an adjusting nut. too far 1 way or the other will give you what you see in the video. jim shea has some good papers on the procedure for centering the valve if you search the site. sorry i don't have the link on hand.
You need to adjust the nut under the dust cap counterclockwise. I JUST did this to my car today. It was harder to turn to the right than to the left. I only had to adjust the nut about 1/2 turn. You may need to go a little more than that
Man, I told my wife, "this guy must have that dog in the background really trained. He hasn't moved a muscle". After watching it again, it could be a mailbox. Duh!

HAHA, I wish my dog was trained that well! (Yes, it is just a mailbox)
Thanks all for the input, I didn't know that that nut had any effect. The instructions that came with the new gaskets was rather lame and I can't find this particular part in my Chilton's manual. The whole car is now in the hands of the repair shop, at least I know it'll be done right.
i think what is actually happening is that the pressure is so much that it is forcing the wheel back on its own like a shock absorber so take above advice and go for it!!

This adjustment procedure is in the GM Service Manual and is VERY SIMPLE and easy to do. Really a 15 minute job and certainly a DIY job.
