Default carb. trouble

hey, just got my first corvette and am having carb trouble. Most people tell me to trash the quadra-jet and go to a holly or edelbrock. What have you done with your cars, rebuild or replace. What carb do you recomend, I am thinking about going with the edelbrock and new intake

you will find that the general consensus here is to get the qjet rebuilt by someone who knows what he is doing and it will run just as good or better than anything else.

Think about it this way: The basic Holley design dates back to the first installation on '57 Fords. The Edelbrock is nothing more than a rebranded Carter AFB that dates from the sixties. The Q-Jet, on the other hand, is a much newer design by GM, and they didn't skimp on any part of it. It is a sophisticated carburetor with small primaries to give excellent throttle response, and large secondaries controlled by airflow for top end performance. It is a great carb for all around street use.

Cheers,
Pete

Congrats on the new car. I like the Q-jet as well for your applicatiion. Unless your going to modify the engine significantly and are no longer concerned with economy, it's a good choice.

The most common problems with the Q-jet are accelerator pump failure, worn throttle shafts and choke problems, all of which are easily repaired. If you are not mechanically inclined, there should be someone in your area that can assist you.

I agree! GM would not have stayed with the Q-jet for so long if it wasn't reliable and versatile. Consider having someone experienced with Q-Jets rebuild yours.

Alan

The Q jet is a great carb for the street. I would not say it is newer technology since it has been around since the 60s. Tuned right it can be a great running carb.

thanks for the help, I have talked with the president of the corvette club I just joined and he told me the same thing all of you have. He also said he knew how to rebuild the qjet and make it run like new and would be glad to help me out. Thats good news to me because I would like to keep as mutch stock equipment on the car as I can. Thanks again for the help, I am learning alot about my car by reading the forums.
