Default choke question

i was told i need choke because car stalls sometimes for 1st half hour. when warm it runs fine. i have a stock quadra jet in a 72 auto with a 454. can someone tell me how to change and where to get new one? i know nothing about carbs. i want to keep it original also. do i need to go to a mechanic for this? thanks.

If you truly know nothing about carbs, I think a mechanic or knowledgable friend is in order. If you have a choke now and it's not working, it may be a very simple adjustment. Adding one can be trickier. I don't think lack of a choke will cause the symptom you have for a half hour. Maybe a few minutes, but after the car warms up, the choke should be off anyway. I think you need someone familiar with the choke system to take a look.

It sounds like your choke just needs adjusted, or maybe just the fast idle, choke pull off, etc. All part of a good tune up.

Hi Nutsy,
Do you have the Chassis Service Manual? In the Engine Fuel System chapter there is a section about adjusting the choke on your q-jet that may help you figure out what's going on.
Regards,
Alan

Another possibility, the choke may be adjusted too far and staying on too long, causing the car to flood. The idle could be set too low. It all works together. The tube that conducts the heat up to the breather to warm the carb and let the choke go off may be gone. The fuel may be running back to the tank, or leaking out the bottom of the carb instead of staying in the bowl. The fuel pump may not have enough pressure to keep the quadrajet bowl full enough to feed the big block. Again, if you aren't familiar, find someone who is and it may be a very simple fix.

Yep, a service manual, little time to read and you're there.
If you're not comfortable then get someone to look at it, but otherwise you should be OK.

Hi Again,
Yes, it's the GM manual that called 'Chassis Service Manual'. And yes, it's for the full line.
The info is in Section 6M, Engine Fuel. Look for the Q-Jet section and choke adjustment.
I'm sorry I can't help... I'm not much of a mechanic. All I know is AIR-FUEL-SPARK-VROOM!
Regards,
Alan
