If the fingers are exposed I have ok luck using a dental pick to release each little finger.
But if their not exposed then I agree crushing the nut and breaking it is the cheapest and least damaging way.
You can try squeezing the item at 90 deg. from the tangs, but more than likely it will deform or break before it will pull off. Those items are meant to throw away when they are removed.
thanks for the reply. i broke a stud on the heater control thumb wheel while is was trying to disassemble it for a clean-up. luckily i had a control that was in even worse shape than the one i was cleaning, so i "borrowed" a wheel. one of those ^&(%(*&(^& moments.
