...About the ramps... i have heard good things about the rhino ramps... but my only problem is they are plastic...
Yeah, I was a little concerned about that. They had a picture of a suburban on them, so I brought mine home and put my suburban on them. Shook it around and tried to make it fall or tip off before I got under the Vette on the ramps... No problem. Also, they had a rubber tip on the ramps that keeps them from sliding across a polished concrete floor when you drive on them. I recommend them.
Kinda depends on what I'm doing and how long it'll be up in the air. I've got a floor jack and some jack stands, but for a quick check on something, I use ramps. I got some "Rhino Ramps" from Auto Zone. I don't have any clearance problems with them, when I'm driving on or off, but I have a stock air dam. I think they cost $40 or $50 dollars, but I bought them a couple of years ago, so that may be wrong.
Rhino ramps are available at Walmart for $25. They are wide enough for C5 tires, are very light and have a very high weight capacity. I highly recommend them.
All this discussion of ramps / jacks brings something to mind... ALWAYS un-latch or remove your t-tops before you jack up the car! :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:

And BTW.......ZEP rules!!!
Bonzo left us too early.
Floor jacks and ramps are great. If you wanna buy them cheap, and your in the US I recommend you goto Canadian Tire's website, you will find stands cheap, and they are in Cdn $. saving you a bundle. I'm not endorsing Cdn. Tire, but if it will save ya a few bucks! http://www.canadiantire.ca/
I have also considered a poormans kwiklift. My thoughts are with using serrated floor grating similar to that found in industrial plants. It is serrated on top and comes in many weights. The spec book says 2" with 1/2 inch spacing will easily carry the weight. It looks like 2" flatbar on edge spaced 1/2 inch apart and connected with a spiral 1/4 round welded every six inches. This connected to a frame on either end will work. Will post a photo if I go this route. The fellows that work with steel may have photos or know about it. The serrations add traction. One sheet can be purchased at 30 inches wide and 20 feet long. Enough for 2 sets if you want to be thrifty.
I use both the jack stands/jack and ramps. It really depends on what I'm doing. I had the Rhino Ramps, but returned them as they don't provide the lift that the metal ramps give.
I thought I was the ONLY one that jacked up my car and then shoved the ramps underneath the wheels. I can't stand the thought of working underneath the car with just jackstands...

I was extremely paranoid at first. I'm getting more and more used to it. I give the car a really good shake once it's up. :yesnod:
Actually, once I get it on the ramps, I position jackstands a little bit back from the ramps just in case the ramps fail. And I still give it a couple of good shakes just to make sure.
i have mine setup with ramps under the front wheels, jack stands just under the rear of the doors, and my floor jack under the diff... i was pushing shoving leaning up against it... didnt budge... it think that with the ramps up there it actually helps keep the car in the little tire craddles... not sure if it works like that... but i couldnt get it to budge
ramps, jack stands, and jack ..... get the plastic ramps the dont slide out from under the car when ur driven up them as easy as the metal ones do i think there called RHINO RAMPS

I agree you can never be too cautious... I usually make sure there is someone home as well, in case I run into trouble.
If you're using metal ramps, please use jack stands too. I've seen a set collapse. When I got home, mine went to the curb. Now it's jackstands only.Just my .02 worth.
