Got this yesterday and want to know in what order does it install (starting with the carb and working your way to the intake). The kit came with a heat shield, a thin gasket & a 1/4" gasket.
Is it "carb-thin gasket-heat shield-1/4" gasket-intake manifold"?
I would like to know if a heat shield is absolutely necessary. The build sheet just shows a single gasket. If a heat insulator is needed, does it have to be a large shield like the one vetteguy shows?
I have one of those on my BB. I put it on with a thick gasket under the carb and the thin one under the heat shield. I suppose it really won't make much difference. I've had it both ways, and with both gaskets think or thin. On is the key word here. It was a CHevy HP part, so it won't show in the AIM or anywhere else.
The idea of that shield is to radiate heat away from the carb float bowls (Holley). Don't think it'd do much for a Q-Jet.
It will be your second choice, carb-1/4" gasket-heat shield-thin gasket. The Idea is for the heat to get to the heat shield, and be radiated away, and then the carb well insulated from the heat shield
I installed a holley heat sheild, it is only the size of the carb gaskets.
I was stunned by how much it reducded the carb. temp.
before it was too hot to touch, after.... Ice cold,
it actually started to create condensation on the carb. it was so cold !

You have to modify the shield a little to get things to work - once modified and set up, it works very well, and is effective in eliminating bowl and pump percolation after shutdown. Photos and how-to on the mod are covered in my paper "BG Carb Installation." E-mail me if you want a copy:
Basically, you first need to cut off the front of the heat shield so it will clear your thermostat housing. The shield does not need to be longer than the length of the primary float bowl. I then cut the back of the shield to match the front, and cut the sides of the shield so they are straight.
The shield is most effective if you install the 1/4" gasket between the manifold and the shield - this keeps some heat out of the shield. The problem with doing this is that a Holley or BG carb accel pump lever will hit the shield and depress the pump lever if you install the carb on top of the shield with the thin gasket. To solve this, you need to put a "jog" in the shield to clear the accel pump lever(s). If you don't have the capability to jog the shield, you have to put the 1/4" gasket on top of the shield to give the carb adequate clearance for the accel pump lever(s).
