I ruined a radio with hardware store fittings and a copper line. Got a complete kit from ZIP and have had no problems in the last 8 years. From my experience only the factory fitting works on the gauge end.

I believe you are right about this. Since the gauge is designed for a compression fitting, I ended up rigging a small length of copper tubing and a ferrule inside the fittings I found to make sure it would work.

This Auto Meter kit from Summit contains the correct fittings.

The link is for the 4' version. They also make a 3' and a 6' kit. And you can get a -3 AN in all three lengths instead of the -4 AN.

Next time I'll go that route.

Best bet is to replace the gauge with an electrical one with a sender. On my 'to do' list. C.

Just cut the end off and reuse ( if you have enough )....make sure it is straight up when you tighten it !

The plastic tube should have a small brass tube inside to support it when the ferrul is tightened. This gets overlooked a lot of times, without it plastic tube collapses and leaks.

It's not uncommon, but I don't know if GM did it originally.

Where can one gets these little items? I have never seen or used one and I'll bet they make a huge difference.

My local hardware store has them, and I wouldn't be surprised if O'Reilly's (and other auto parts stores) also have them in the brass cabinet. I never had anyone ask for them while I worked for O'Reilly's, but they're there in ours. I saw them a couple weeks ago in the Everco brass section (behind the counter).
