alright help me decide on a new carb.
right now i have a holley 80508s which is a 4160 dual feed Vacuum secondary carb 750cfm. Im looking at the 650 Speed Demon or and Edelbrock 1806 AVS thunder series. Im just getting tired of the Holley having to tune the thing all the time and the bad exhuast smell and leaks. I just fixed a gas leak from the base plate today. I had to fix the same leak last year too. Im beging to think that the Holley is too big for my motor.
my motor specs are
355
9.5:1 comp
218/228 @.050 .520 lift
Vortec heads with 2.02/1.6 valves
professional products Crosswind (Just like RPM Air Gap) Square bore
Accel HEI Super Coil
Trans is a th400 with a 3.08 rear
quadrajet will not fit a squarebore intake and I am not going to change intakes. I was told to stay away form the adapters to make a q-jet work on a squarebore intake.

Asking for which carb to use is like asking for which religion to join. You're going to get the same number of answers to both questions, and the answers will be based on the same non-emotional technical merits...

Speaking of carbs. I sent you an e-mail a few days ago. Did you get it?

Thanks for the Help.
Personally I would just get a new rebuild kit for it. That is a nice carb as long as you using this for the street. I have had Holleys all my life and can tear one down and do a complete rebuild in a few hours. Just think about it really think about it, if it is leaking just do a rebuild with all new gaskets and if it still leaks you are either over tighting the screws, which folks do all the time or something could be warped. There is a reason why you are having issues and buying another vendor may not solve it.
The best advise I could give is stick with a vendor and buy 2 books about that vendor and learn how to fix things and more importantly why they happen. Most folks don't like Holley's because they never learn how to fix or adjust them.
You should not have to keep tunning the carb unless you are making drastic changes to the engine or are changing it due to temp changes in the weather and your track performance is suffering.
Lastly the smell has to do with your AFR ratio not the carb vendor, unless it is in real need of a complete overhaul.

I thinks thats what Im going to do. I did fix the fuel leak it was the base plate gasket. I did notice some slag in the base plate so I got to thinking and a rebuild and check of every passage in the carb is probalby the best idea. I have the SA book Super Tuning and Modifying Holleys along with the Holley DVD. Im going to buy a rebuild kit and a seconday quick change kit along with the Holley Model 4150-4160 Carburetor Handbook.
here is a pic of what the carb looks like

You and your vette should be loving that Holley...it is a great unit and very easy to adjust once you learn how. Simple reading is all it takes.
Lastly, once your done with the rebuild and get it on the car get back onto the forum and explain your issues in as much detail as possible. I am 100% positive that we all will have plenty of advise to help solve any issues that you are having.
I learned most of what I know from this forum and the book.
