Default strange find on front spindle

I started taking the front suspension out of my 1971 car this weekend. Upper and lower control arms came out OK with no desasters from the springs due to good advice from fellow members.

But when I removed the R/S spindle I found some odd raised ribs in the shaft. At 1st I felt that the bearings had gauled the shaft. But the hub had turned freely before I had removed it. I later installed the bearings on the shaft both inner and outer and the spot I am talking about was in between the 2 bearings.

How could the spindle have got this way?

I feared I had to buy a new spindle . but I think I am ok to re use

Hi David,
I took a look at some pictures of the spindles from my car.
There is an area between the the 2 bearing surfaces that isn't machined as smoothly as the bearing surfaces. I wouldn't say there are ribs but it is a very different surface.
I hope you and your family are well.
Regards,
Alan

The area between the race journals is rough turned so it sounds like you're ok. If the journals are not scored or otherwise worn you're ok.

Thanks Alan and GTR1999

The feed back sounds like I am ok, really glad I will not have to spend money on a spindle. Budget is already pushed hard.

Alan , Family is well. Our oldest daughter Smantha who is in school

at UNCW in Wilmington NC , just received an opprounity to go Scootland for her senior year as an exchange student.

So we are all pretty excited / sad she is grow up and gone.

The college is called Striling and I understand part of the campus is in a 16th century castle.

The car is getting the biggest face lift since I have owned it.

Motor coming out to install correct LT-1 cam and to also paint entire block as well as fire wall and fender skirts.

Also installing new A Arm bushings / ball joints / etc.

Hope to have all wrapped up for the 1st car show of 09 in late January.

Hope you and your family are also well.

David

They are only finish machined on the bearing surfaces, not in the middle.

Hi David,
Sounds like you're all well.
Your daughter's opportunity is a chance for a true 'once in a life time' experience. Plus, it gives you a great reason to visit Scotland!
You're going to busy getting your list done on your car by January. I wish I was a little closer and could lend a hand, or at least offer encouragement.
Regards,
Alan

Just a sidenote...my daughter earned her Master's in Scotland at the University of Glasgow a couple of years ago. It was a long year with her gone...and it's a little easier when it's college and not high school...but it was a great experience for her. We visited her a couple of times and went to Stirling Castle. It's a fantastic place!

There's a few Forum Members in the area you can call on to help *look out for her*.

If you need any info let me know. I'll put your daughter in touch with mine and she can help fill in any holes.

When she was wavering back and forth whether to go, I told her that when she was old I wanted her to tell the story of how she spent a year in Scotland....NOT how she COULD have spent a year in Scotland!

Hello Alan

I agree that the schedule is tight. The car show is one I have never attended in the past and hope to make it next year. It is a Shriners fund raiser. I have made very good progress so far. Key is to stay on plan and not allow mission creep to set in and grow the project.

That will be a time / budget buster for sure. I too wish you were closer. I have seen your work in photos you have posted and your advice to others is always to the point and easy to follow.

As for Sammy, The emotions are mixed. A balance of fear / worry mixed with pride and excitement that our little girl is grown up and making her mark on the world.

I will keep you posted.

Best Regards
David

Thanks for this note about your daughter.Wow , it really is a small world. This forum never fails to impress me with the caliper of people that I have encountered. Sammy will be home for Thanksgiving and I will make her aware of your Daughter as a resource for information.

PS , your pride in your daughter really shows. I have learned that I am hard wired to have little kids not grown up kids. Letting go is not easy. But I am getting better.

Best Regards
David
