Difference between original and replacement vapor canister
I replaced the vapor canister on my 1979 today. I noticed that the
replacement which is Napa part no. 229800 which is made by
Delphi is different than the original. The bottom of the original
part has grill covering a filter. (This is visible after removing
a cover and fiber filter). The replacement appears sealed at the
bottom.
Do other brands look the same as the Delphi or like the original?
I did install a new filter and reused the original bottom cover but
I don't see the purpose as the unit appears sealed?
The cannister "vents" the fuel fumes by collecting them, then releasing them into the induction system [base of the carb] to be burned in the engine. It doesn't 'dump' fuel fumes or raw fuel into the air...that would defeat the purpose of the emissions system.
If it is sealed then what is the purpose of the fiber filter that mounts
under the canister? There is a cover for this filter that has a
vent tube in the center.
The original one was not sealed at the bottom as there was
a strong gas odor coming from the filter in the bottom of the
unit.
I believe that the charcoal filter absorbs the fumes....until the car is operating again. Then the vacuum off the intake manifold sucks it back into the engine for burning.
I replaced mine on my 1980 and found the same thing. The bottom was sealed. It was a Delco canister. I guess they are constructed slightly different now. It's been a while since I replaced it but I think there was a vent now at the top of it.
